In 1976, 1977 and 1978 the last few remaining Class 24s at Crewe were in demand for railtour haulage, and reached a few places where they were not normal visitors, especially on passenger turns. Sadly, these tours always permed 2 from the last 3 of the Crewe boiler-fitted locos - 24082, 24087 and 24133 - even on the summer workings.
This is Penistone at the eastern end of the Woodhead line on the 4th December 1976. A grey, foggy day on the western side of the Pennines turned into a glorious sunny, snow-covered morning in Yorkshire. 24082 leads 24087 on the run from Crewe to Loughborough on the "Great Central" railtour.
24087 leads 24133 at Manchester Victoria whilst working from Crewe to Carnforth on the "Dick Turpin" railtour on the 10th July 1977.
As A4 Pacific "Sir Nigel Gresley" backs onto the train at Carnforth, 24133 and 24087 wait to return light-engine through the station on the 10th July 1977.
