The Day After
These pictures were taken on the evening of Sunday 24th May 1970, less than 24 hours after the fire had started.
On this calm evening, the effects of the fire are not immediately apparent. Then you notice the smoke damage to the towers, especially the top of the Brotannia Tower. A close inspection of the tubes shows that there is a definite sag - and it is apparent that the basic structural integrity of the bridge has been lost.
A longer range shot shows the full length of the bridge from the Anglesey shore. Within a short time the damage became more apparent, as the tubes started to rust - their protective paint having been burnt off in the fire.
